History
North Charleston is a growing city with a diverse culture and state-of-the-art recreation facilities. It’s known for its fine dining establishments and riverfront sceneries, but it has also gained international recognition as one of only four locations worldwide that produces Boeing commercial aircraft.
The city was founded in 1901 with the help of local business and community leaders. They wanted to create a commercial and industrial center above the Charleston peninsula to attract new businesses and provide commuting access for residents.
Today, Quarterman Park is a popular destination for families and outdoor enthusiasts. It’s located in the heart of Old North Charleston at Park Circle and bounded by Noisette Creek. Samuel Prioleau originally owned the land as an Oak Grove plantation in the 1770s. It later became a polo club and the site of the first US polo tournament. Park Circle was designed by Ebenezer Howard using his innovative 1898 town planning model of a garden city with a central green space and radiating streets that could expand and contract in concentric rings.
Outdoor Activities
North Charleston boasts an impressive collection of parks for residents to enjoy. The city’s suburban neighborhoods are surrounded by quaint green spaces that offer an escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Many homes in the area, including those in the desirable Indigo Palms community, overlook these charming areas of natural beauty.
The largest and most unique park in the city is located at Park Circle, a circular neighborhood in historic Old North Charleston. The center of the park is occupied by a large, well-maintained public park featuring baseball fields, a gazebo, and a children’s playground.
Another popular North Charleston park is Riverfront Park on Everglades Avenue, a beautiful waterside venue replete with family-sized swings and scenic views of the Cooper River. The park also hosts an annual outdoor sculpture competition and is home to the Greater Charleston Naval Base Memorial, a moving tribute to the thousands of military personnel who served at the former Navy base before its closure in 1996. There are plenty of other restaurants and breweries that you can visit in the area. Some of them include Orange Spot and Commonhouse Aleworks.

Park Circle is home to a vibrant mix of dining, entertainment, and shopping options that appeal to all ages. This neighborhood hangout is centered around a lovely pond called the Duck Pond, which is popular with migratory birds and local residents who enjoy fishing from its piers or jogging around the paved paths.
Several eateries are within walking distance of the park, including popular brunch spots like Orange Spot Coffee and Olde Village Market and Deli. The CODfather Proper Fish & Chips serves up North Atlantic cod fillets battered in the restaurant’s signature style and Lola offers Cajun and Creole seafood favorites.
Park Circle is also home to a women-led book stop and the new Blade & Bull Axe Throwing that’s set to rival Charleston’s wildly popular Chucktown location. There’s also the Park Circle Theater, where residents can take acting classes and attend productions.
